As a UX Designer at Nabors, I led key projects across HMI, mobile, and web platforms, leveraging in-depth user interviews and contextual inquiries. Field visits to oil sites, the ROC’s courders and visits to third party clients allow me to gather valuable qualitative insights directly from drillers, grounding our designs in real user needs. This hands-on approach enabled me to focus holistically on both user-centered solutions and operational efficiency. Our efforts resulted in optimized task performance, enhanced user engagement, improved design and development workflows, and strengthened cross-departmental collaboration.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Role
Product Designer | Research - UXD - Interaction - UI - Testing

Nabors Impact Metrics
Mobile app design to enhance flexibility and efficiency for operators who manage well drilling operations. Typically confined to their workstations with six monitoring screens, these operators needed constant access to critical information. By identifying and adapting key features from the web platform into a mobile-friendly format, I empowered users to monitor and perform essential tasks from anywhere.

Project Type
"Mobile-First Adaptation"
designed to bring essential web-based functionalities into a portable, user-friendly mobile application.

Project Overview & Goal
The goal is to enhance accessibility and flexibility for users who operate in dynamic or constrained environments, enabling them to perform key tasks away from their primary workstations.

Methodology

DISCOVERY PHASE | RESEARCH

  • Stakeholder Discovery: Understand what stakeholders believe the product or feature should achieve. Identify the business goals, key metrics, and desired outcomes.

  • User Research: Conducted interviews with ROC at Nabors and third party clients.

IDEATE & DESIGN PHASE

  • Solution Development: Creation of wireframes to visualize solutions tested and reviewed by the project managers.

TESTING PHASE

  • Usability Testing: Conducted usability testing on local and remote ROCs, it included UMUX-Lite and SUS.

  • Analyze results & Check Metrics: Prioritizing findings based on impact on the user experience.

  • Summarize Insights: Documented findings, including test objectives, methods, participants, and key takeaways, focusing on those problems affecting usability.

  • Presented Findings: Present results to designers, developers, product owners, and third party clients.

ITERATE ON DESIGN PHASE

  • Redesigned Problematic Areas: Adjusted the prototypes to resolve identified issues, incorporating user suggestions.

IMPLEMENTATION PHASE

  • Cross-functional Work with Developers: Ensuring that all the recommended updates were implemented and aligning the solutions with what was technically achievable.

  • Compliance Check/Design validation: QA the implementation to ensure that met the specifications, interactions, and overall user experience.

Key Findings

  • Users see potential in using the rosebud (3D view).

  • Users suggest adding more items from the table, up to "Score."

  • Users want pinch-and-zoom functionality in the Plots view.

  • Users struggled to find "Setup" and "Add Offset Wells" due to confusing icons.

  • Users mentioned add other RSS manufacturers, including Halliburton.

  • Users found the column editing feature on the table useful.

  • Users had trouble locating critical "This Slide" information in the rosebud view.

  • Users struggled to find the "Offset Wells" option, expecting it within the Setup area (as settings).

  • Users are unsure if the mobile search for "Downlink Options" adds value.

  • Users suggest skipping "Feedback" for the "Override" screen, as it’s often a nuisance for ROCs and vendors.

Key Solutions

  • Simplify Navigation: Redesign icons and reorganize features like "Setup" and "Offset Wells" for better accessibility.

  • Enhance Interactions: Add pinch-and-zoom functionality in Plots view and refine the rosebud (3D view) for usability.

  • Expand Customization: Allow users to add more table items and improve column editing features.

  • Streamline Processes: Remove unnecessary prompts like the "Feedback" screen for "Override."

  • Improve Mobile Experience: Ensure SmartNAV mobile supports various use cases and refine mobile search features.

  • Stay Competitive: Address concerns about competitors by incorporating comparable or superior features.

  • Engage Users: Validate changes with follow-up testing and gather ongoing feedback.

Metrics
The mobile app project has made a big difference by giving operators much more freedom and flexibility in how they work. Key features have been widely adopted, showing the app really meets user needs with its mobile-friendly design. Post-launch surveys showed high satisfaction, with operators appreciating the convenience and accessibility the app brings. That said, this is just the starting point—we’re already planning ways to make it even better.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Role
Product Designer | Research - UXD - Interaction - UI - Testing

Nabors Impact Metrics
Web application design for issue identification, data driven performance improvement and real time operational visibility.

Project Type
Web application part of Nabors’ RigCLOUD cloud-based software suite.

Project Overview & Goal
The goal is to create a portal that enables users to promptly identify and manage issues, enhance drilling performance, and boost transparency and visibility across Nabors' operations.

Methodology

DISCOVERY PHASE | RESEARCH

  • Stakeholder Discovery: Understand what stakeholders believe the product or feature should achieve. Identify the business goals, key metrics, and desired outcomes.

  • User Research: I conducted interviews with the project managers overseeing the three applications slated for integration, as well as with members of the operations team and the Remote Operations Center (ROC) operators.

IDEATE & DESIGN PHASE

  • Solution Development: Creation of wireframes to visualize solutions tested and reviewed by the project managers.

TESTING PHASE

  • Usability Testing: Conducted usability testing on local Nabors ROCs and third party ROCs, it included UMUX-Lite and SUS.

  • Analyze results & Check Metrics: Prioritizing findings based on impact on the user experience.

  • Summarize Insights: Documented findings, including test objectives, methods, participants, and key takeaways, focusing on those problems affecting usability.

  • Presented Findings: Present results to product owners, operations, and some third party clients.

  • Depth comparison feature needs improvement in usability.

  • Color feedback requires refinement to avoid confusion.

  • Limited visibility of key parameters in the application.

  • Frequent notifications can be overwhelming; customizable alerts are needed.

  • Naming conventions should be more descriptive and user-friendly.

Key Solutions

  • Streamline Data Display – Prioritize key identifiers, group related data, and structure critical information clearly.

  • Enhance Usability – Remove unnecessary features, improve icon interactions, and automate default displays.

  • Optimize Visual Design – Use intuitive colors, reduce horizontal scrolling, and invert display order for relevance.

  • Enable Customization – Allow toggling between detailed and simplified views with adjustable notifications.

  • Improve Data Access – Use tables or modals for deeper insights, grouping key metrics logically.

  • Refine Navigation – Simplify menus, reorganize features, and ensure intuitive access to key functions.
